Facility Details

The “El Nuevo” in El Nuevo San Juan Health Center  distinguishes the building from our original site, The San Juan Health Center, now affectionately known as “El Viejo San Juan.”

Considered the heart of our clinical operations, El Nuevo San Juan Health Center houses 16 departments offering medical, diagnostic, and ancillary services. Since it opened in 2001, El Nuevo San Juan serves as the home base for our network of satellite clinics in the South Bronx, Central Harlem, and Corona, Queens. Its central location, convenient schedule, comprehensive primary and specialty services, and bilingual, culturally competent staff, (most of whom live in the neighborhood) make it a vital community health resource.

In 2014, El Nuevo San Juan expanded to create the Simpson Pavilion, which added more clinical space for obstetrics, pediatrics, gynecology, adult medicine, support services, and podiatry.

With this expansion, Urban Health Plan tripled the number of medical exam rooms, expand specialty services and special programs and expand its radiology services, allowing for more state-of-the-art health services that promote the best health outcomes for a vibrant and growing South Bronx community. More than 20,000 South Bronx residents visit the Simpson Pavilion, a 54,000 square-foot facility, to receive quality healthcare.

Urban Health Plan, Inc., (UHP) is a federally qualified community health center licensed as a diagnostic and treatment center under Article 28 of the New York State Public Health Law and accredited by the Joint Commission. UHP is in its 40th year of providing comprehensive and affordable primary and specialty health care services to the Hunts Point, Mott Haven, and Morrisania sections of the Bronx. Its facilities include its main site, eight satellites, ten school health programs, three part-time facilities, and three administrative/program sites that house its WIC program, as well as other grant-funded programs.

In addition to being close to wonderful Bronx neighborhoods, UHP is centrally located near the suburbs of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, and other New York City boroughs, like Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens counties.

The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City. Coextensive with Bronx County, it was the last of the 62 counties of New York State to be incorporated. Located north of Manhattan and Queens, and south of Westchester County, the Bronx is the only borough that is located primarily on the mainland.

People all around the world know the Bronx as the home of the New York Yankees, the Bronx Zoo, and the New York Botanical Garden—not to mention as the birthplace of hip-hop. Look deeper and you’ll discover the quaint maritime village of City Island, the cultural attractions of Fordham and Belmont, aka the “real Little Italy,” centered on the restaurants and cafés of Arthur Avenue. Grand Concourse, in the South Bronx, is full of art deco marvels.

About one-fifth of the Bronx's area and one-quarter of its land area is given over to park land: about 7,000 acres. Nearer the borough's center, and along the Bronx River, is Bronx Park. Its northern end houses the New York Botanical Gardens, which preserve the last patch of the original hemlock forest that once covered the entire county, and its southern end the Bronx Zoo, the largest urban zoological gardens in the U.S.
