The El Paso County Hospital District’s healthcare system includes the following entities: University Medical Center of El Paso, an acute care teaching hospital, UMC Outpatient Clinics, which are primary care centers, El Paso Health, the district’s wholly-owned subsidiary HMO, and the University Medical Center Foundation.

University Medical Center of El Paso is the primary teaching institution for Texas Tech University's four-year Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. As such, the University Medical Center of El Paso/Texas Tech campus is the only academic healthcare setting in far West Texas and Southern New Mexico. That affiliation and the fact that University Medical Center of El Paso is El Paso’s only not-for-profit, community-owned hospital, help ensure that high-quality healthcare services are available to all, regardless of their ability to pay.

University Medical Center of El Paso is home to the region’s only Level 1 trauma center. Our regional influence also includes: the hospital’s Mother/Baby division, a Regional Referral Center for high-risk pregnant women; a state of the art Regional Laboratory; the West Texas Regional Poison Center; and affiliation agreements with over 50 of the region’s educational institutions.

Unlike the other hospitals in the El Paso area, University Medical Center of El Paso is owned by the people of El Paso. They are the city’s only not-for-profit, community hospital, which means their allegiances are to no one other than the people they serve.

UMC has earned recognition three times as one of the nation's top-performing hospitals in a study titled "100 Top Hospitals: Benchmarks for Success."

  • The study is done annually by Truven Health Analytics (formerly Thomson/Reuters) to help identify those U.S. hospitals that demonstrate superior performance on the basis of key measures related to clinical practices, operations, and financial management. UMC is the only El Paso hospital ever to earn this recognition.
