Additional Recreation Information

Together, the "Twin Cities" of Lewiston & Auburn have a population of nearly 60,000. They are split by the Androscoggin River and its Great Falls—and you can walk the Androscoggin River Walk between the two towns. The mile-long paved path stretches from a small park beside the Great Falls in Auburn to a pedestrian bridge that crosses the river to Simard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston. It's a popular spot from which to watch the Liberty Festival on July 4th and the Great Falls Balloon Festival in August.

Lewiston

You can see Maine’s only basilica in downtown Lewiston. The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul has a rose window and architecture that were modeled after the cathedral at Chartres in France. At the Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary, you can go birdwatching, walking or jogging on trails through forests and fields.

Auburn

You can fish for bass or lake trout at Lake Auburn or discover minerals like feldspar and tourmaline at Mount Apatite Park. The city’s Festival Plaza beside the Androscoggin is home to a free summer concert series and performances by the Auburn Community Band. In January, you can attend the Auburn Winter Festival at Lost Valley ski area.

Portland

Visitors to the Greater Portland region will find more than enough to explore without even leaving the peninsula. Though smaller than some of its east coast rivals, this little city has a world-class dining scene, a truly magnificent art museum, and plenty of places to enjoy the scenic rocky coast. Greater Portland’s safe environment, beautiful landscapes, and vibrant arts and food culture combine to create a treasured quality of life for residents and visitors alike. Portland consistently makes top-ten lists of best places to vacation and is also appearing on "best of” lists for families, outdoor lifestyle, and business startups.
