Columbia is a planned community comprising 10 self-contained villages, located in Howard County, Maryland—the second wealthiest county in the United States, according to 2013 U.S. Census Bureau figures. Come to Columbia, recently named by Money Magazine as the No. 1 Best Small City to live in the U.S., and take a stroll around our Lakefront.

In Columbia’s new downtown, you can live, play, learn, and work. Call it “citysmart.” Everywhere you look there’s something new—and right beside it is the next thing to come. This burst of energy is centered in a community whose schools are second to none and whose quality of life ranks among the highest in the country. Everything is here—and it’s changing every day.

Mid-rise office buildings are clustered downtown between the Columbia Mall and Lake Kittamaqundi, which is surrounded by an exercise path, restaurants, and the town’s celebratory symbol of inclusiveness: the 35-foot-high metal sculpture The People Tree.

Howard County is rightly known for its great schools, award-winning library system, world-class annual arts festival, and many varied parks and cultural opportunities. But of course, there's more, including the vibrant and still growing new town of Columbia, as well as the beautiful scenery of farms and open space in the county's western reaches.

If you’re a nature enthusiast, journey through the many paths around the County, experience the paddle boats or trails at Centennial Park, or discover the extensive educational programming and marvels housed at our Robinson Nature Center. If you are inspired by the Arts, stop by “The People Tree,” one of Columbia’s most symbolic sculptures that captures our collective goal in fostering an inclusive, diverse community. Or take a drive down to Fulton and visit our beloved African Art Museum of Maryland. You’re also invited to catch a dynamic and interactive performance at Toby’s Dinner Theatre or enjoy a concert at our renowned Merriweather Post Pavilion, both centrally located in Downtown Columbia. Howard County is home to about 40,000 acres of farm land. With more than 318 farms that help stock our seasonal Farmer’s Markets, be sure to swing by any one of our locations and take advantage of our fresh, local offerings. During your stay, you’re also invited to a culinary adventure at any of our award- winning restaurants, many of which provide our local farm ingredients. If you enjoy shopping, then stop by any of our Village Centers, Main Street Ellicott City or Historic Savage Mill to shop local and support our small businesses.

Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry and named after heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, the outdoor amphitheater located in beautiful Symphony Woods was originally intended to be the home of the National Symphony Orchestra. It didn’t take long, however, for it to instead become a rock n’ roll mecca, hosting performances by Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, and scores of other music revolutionaries. The venue has received resounding acclaim, including being named one of the best outdoor amphitheaters in the country by Rolling Stone magazine.
